The 2017 vintage is one of the most promissing of the past few years with wines that are particularly elegant and harmonious, with superb, concentrated aromas and a solid ageing potential. The weather conditions during the growing season were difficult and extreme, resulting in a challenging task at harvest time. The high temperatures and almost total lack of rainfall since Springtime brought the harvest date forward by almost 10 days in many regions. Although these extreme conditions impacted heavily on the size of the harvest, with one of the smallest in the last 60 years, the quality is exceptional.

Cépages:

100% Syrah

Terroir:

Grapes are sourced from the parcels of Pierrelles and Muret Robert, in the eastern sector of the Hermitage hill, on alluvial terraces of the Rhône River at 200 m in altitude.

Vinification:

Harvest was all done by hand, according to the appellation regulations for Hermitage, in the early morning hours to favour aromatics and freshness. 100% destemmed and fermented at controlled temperatures of 22° to 24° max for 24 days. The wine is then placed in 4 new 275-liter Laurus barrels to finish the malo-lactic transformation (malic acid into the softer lactic acid) and aged on the fine lees for 15 months before bottling.

Production: 1 198 bottles, 61 magnums, 21 jeroboams.
Bottled on May 23rd, 2019

Note de dégustation:

" It offers lots of black cherry and cassis fruit, notes of toasted spice, flowers, incense, and a bloody iron quality, fulll body, and ripe yet polished tannins. It’s a terrific balanced, incredibly satisfying Hermitage to drink over the coming 15 years or more." Jeb Dunnuck (12/12/2019)

The name « Hermitage » comes from the legend of the Knight of Sterimberg. Returning from a Crusade, he repented for his years of warmongering by becoming a hermit, devoting himself to prayer and growing vines on top of the hills of Tain.
