Gabriel Meffre

Gabriel Meffre

Delicious and savoury from day one: this is the commitment of our Gabriel Meffre “signature” wines. For each appellation, and in keeping with the characteristics of the vintage, our know-how is recognisable through our experienced blending of “terroirs” and grape varieties and through our careful maturing, favouring purity of fruit and silkyness of texture. Already enjoyable in their first year after bottling, the Crus also have good aging potential.

When Gabriel Meffre, a young up-and-coming local figure, founded his wine company in Gigondas in 1936, he was convinced of the exceptional quality of the Rhône Valley’s specific terroirs.

It was in tribute to our founder that we created the “Gabriel Meffre” range: emblematic appellations of the Northern and Southern Rhône Valley, each crafted to reflect the “Gabriel Meffre” savoir-faire on a variety of terroirs and according to each vintage.

Gabriel Meffre & le Plan de Dieu

Born in the neighboring village of Séguret, Gabriel Meffre grew up near the Plan de Dieu, a sun-drenched stony plain that had long since been left fallow.

He was convinced that, because of its proximity and similarity to the soils of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the Plan de Dieu would be capable of producing great wines. In the 1950s, he bought a few hectares of this land and meticulously cleared the area to plant vines.

Success was not long in coming… From this Quaternary alluvial terrace, the vines flourished and produced elegant, intense, generous wines, rich in color and flavor.

Vintage after vintage, the exceptional quality of this terroir was confirmed and other winemakers began to settle in. Official recognition came in 2005, when Plan de Dieu was officially classified as a Côtes du Rhône Villages PDO.

Plan de Dieu, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Châteauneuf du Pape… these appellations are at the heart of the Maison’s history.

Each wine in the range has a specific history, deeply rooted in its terroir: from the grape varieties, to the terroir and climate; from the winemaking to the name of the Cuvée.

All Gabriel Meffre wines are named after the patron saint of the village, or the historical leaders who have positively influenced the area.
